Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century Dutch lacquered furniture is defined by European timber frames decorated with japanning techniques designed to imitate Asian lacquerwork. These pieces often feature gilded chinoiserie landscapes, figures, and floral motifs set against dark background finishes.

These side chairs were constructed using solid timber frames covered in multiple layers of varnish or resin paint known as japanning. Gilded highlights were applied using gold leaf or metallic powders, while seats were traditionally upholstered in silk damask, velour, or needlework.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved elements such as vase-shaped splats and cabriole legs with peg joinery. The painted and lacquered surfaces typically exhibit natural craquelure, subtle wear around touch points, and hand-applied gilt ornamentation rather than modern stencil work.

Chinoiserie side chairs can serve as statement accent pieces when placed symmetrically on either side of a console table or mantelpiece. Their ornate gilded patterns provide visual contrast against minimalist contemporary backdrops and neutral wall colours.

Maintain lacquered surfaces by placing them away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber movement and cracking. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or abrasive cleaning compounds.
