A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be placed on the pier, which is the section of wall located between two windows or above a console table. Originally created in the 17th century, these mirrors became prominent features in neoclassical and 19th-century interiors to maximise light reflection.

19th-century pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames coated in gesso, gold leaf gilding, and ebonised paint or lacquer. The reflective surfaces were traditionally fitted with mercury-backed glass or silvered float glass plates.

Authentic 19th-century Swedish mirrors often exhibit hand-carved wood mouldings, layered gesso under leaf gilding, and distinct neoclassical motifs such as swags and crestings. Examining the rear reveals hand-sawn timber backing panels and period-appropriate iron fixings or nails.

A pier mirror can be positioned on a narrow wall between architectural features, above a sideboard, or in an entryway to reflect incoming natural light. Its vertical proportions draw the eye upwards, enhancing ceiling height and adding structure to a living space.
