Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This near pair of Oriental rosewood corner chairs dates from the 1920 period in the Chinese Oriental style. The timber has a warm brown colour and a polished finish. Each chair has a curved crest rail, pierced carved splats, and mother-of-pearl inlay depicting floral and bird motifs across the backrest, seat, and frame. The construction includes rounded corner arms and turned supports connected by stretchers. Visible details include intricately carved wooden panels on the splats and white inlaid floral patterns dotted along the legs and arms. The chairs measure 84 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, with a seat height of 43 cm. These armchairs suit a gentleman's library, a study, or a reception room as occasional seating positioned in a corner or alongside a desk.

FAQs

Originating in traditional Chinese furniture design, corner chairs feature a curved cresting rail designed to fit comfortably in corner spaces or angled room arrangements. The integration of mother-of-pearl inlay became popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties to showcase detailed artisan craft.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods, such as rosewood (zitan or hongmu), and decorated with hand-carved shell (nacre) inserts fitted tightly into recessed timber surfaces.

Authentic examples exhibit complex mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, individual hand-cut shell inlays, and smooth wear around natural contact points on the timber backrests and armrests.

Place a pair in an entryway, bay window alcove, or alongside a simple contemporary console table. Their rich wood tone and intricate shell details create striking structural contrast against minimalist walls.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and nourish the hardwood periodically with natural beeswax polish. Avoid high humidity or direct heat sources to prevent timber movement and loosen shell inlays.
