FAQs

A pier mirror is a tall, vertical looking glass traditionally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as the pier, often placed above a pier table to reflect light and enhance the sense of space in formal rooms.

These mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden or composition frames finished with gesso and silver leaf or gold leaf, housing heavy float glass plates secured with traditional wooden backing boards and iron fixings.

Authentic period mirrors often display slight imperfections in the glass such as minor foxing or bubbles, hand-beveled edges, aged patination on the metallic leaf, and period-appropriate joinery or hardware on the reverse.

These tall mirrors work effectively when mounted in narrow wall spaces, hallways, or flanking a fireplace to draw the eye upward, bounce natural light around the room, and add architectural depth to modern spaces.

The glass should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfibre cloth and a neutral cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly to the surface, while delicate gilded or silvered frames must be kept away from excessive moisture and direct sunlight.
