Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinoiserie and Rococo Revival mirrors from the Victorian period feature asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic motifs such as carved bamboo, leaves, and shells, as well as mythical creatures like phoenixes or dragons. These designs reflected European fascination with East Asian design motifs combined with dramatic, high-relief wood carving.

Traditional giltwood mirror frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated with multiple layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and animal glue), and finished with genuine gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic antique giltwood pieces display natural signs of age, including fine surface cracking (craquelure) throughout the gesso, subtle wear revealing grey or reddish clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and visible hand-carving tool marks on the unfinished timber reverse.

A large giltwood mirror serves as an architectural focal point in a hallway or living space. Positioning it opposite a light source or above a minimalist console table maximises natural illumination and creates a striking contrast against neutral, modern walls.

Giltwood surfaces should only be cleaned using a dry, soft bristle brush or feather duster. Avoid water, liquid sprays, and commercial cleaners, as moisture easily dissolves traditional water gilding and damages the underlying gesso.
