Regency Gonçalo-alvez Side Cabinet

A good late Regency Gonçalo-Alvez side cabinet of narrow proportions, in the manner of Gillows. The well figured rectangular top with a concave front and a pierced brass gallery; the three graduating drawers below with mahogany drawer linings and original small turned knob handles; above a pair of cupboard doors with cross banded frames and well figured panels, enclosing a central shelf. All flanked by a pair of tapering columns with acanthus carved capitals. Raised on a concave fronted plinth base. Good rich colour and patina.
 
This exotic timber Gonçalo-Alvez is sometimes referred to as zebra wood/tiger wood or Jobillo and was used by Gillows from 1823 until mid 1860''s.
