This matched pair of Regency side cabinets and chiffoniers dates from circa 1830. Constructed from mahogany, the pieces display a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish and natural patination. Each cabinet comprises a rectangular top with a thumbnail moulded edge, above two panelled cupboard doors fitted with working locks and keys, flanked by narrow moulded panels, and raised on short, turned tapering feet. The raised superstructure features a three-quarter gallery with reeded edges on two graduating shelves, supported by S-scroll uprights and finely turned spindles. The cabinets stand 142.2 cm high, 97.8 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, these functional storage items suit placement in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The generous top surfaces, enclosed cupboard interiors, and open upper shelving tiers provide practical display and storage capacity for books, tableware, or decorative objects while retaining their architectural period character.

FAQs

Originating in the early nineteenth century during the British Regency period, a chiffonier is a low side cabinet featuring cupboards below and open shelves above, designed for storing linen or displaying items.

Regency craftsmen primarily utilised high-grade imported mahogany, often incorporating flame veneers, dovetail drawer joints, solid wood backing panels, and brass or turned wooden fittings.

Authentic pieces feature construction hallmarks such as hand-cut dovetails, original turned wood or cast brass hardware, hand-sawn secondary timbers like pine or oak, and natural age-related patina.

Positioning these cabinets symmetrically along a wall creates balance in dining or living spaces, providing both top display surfaces and concealed storage.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, keeping the timber clear of direct heat sources and moisture.
