The fauteuil is an upholstered armchair with open sides that originated in France during the early 18th century, developing through the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods to emphasise comfort and refined ornamentation.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, featuring hand-carved detailing, mortise and tenon joinery, and traditional upholstery methods including coil springs and webbed bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved wooden frames showing tool marks, traditional joinery methods without modern metal fasteners, period-appropriate timber ageing, and handmade upholstery foundations.

French armchairs can be incorporated into modern spaces by pairing them with minimalist modern furniture to create a balanced contrast between ornate historical craftsmanship and clean contemporary lines.

Maintenance involves regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, protecting fabrics from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and treating wooden frames with appropriate microcrystalline wax.
