Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors from the 19th century are designed with wide proportions and flat base profiles to sit directly atop a fireplace mantelpiece. They frequently feature architectural elements such as side pilasters, Classical cornices, and decorative friezes executed in the Regency or Neoclassical taste.

Traditional mirrors of this period were built using carved timber frames coated with gesso, a plaster-like substrate, followed by bole clay and thin sheets of genuine gold leaf. Decorative details were frequently fashioned from moulded composition before being water-gilded or oil-gilded.

Authentic period mirrors display signs of age such as slight oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, natural wear to the gilding revealing the reddish bole clay underneath, and hand-cut timber backing boards secured with square-headed iron nails.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or a low sideboard to create a focal point that reflects light across the room. Juxtaposing the formal gold framework against neutral paint tones or contemporary minimalist furniture highlights the historic craftsmanship.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid chipping fragile gesso or lifting gold leaf. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or chemical solvents, as moisture dissolves water-gilding adhesive and permanently damages the finish.
