Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian burr walnut dome-top stationery box exhibits a warm brown colour with distinctive grain patterns across its wooden surfaces. Pierced brass strapwork overlaid with bone, studded decoration with domed head studs, and a matching brass lock escutcheon adorn the hinged lid and front exterior. Measuring 18 cm high, 24 cm wide and 12.5 cm deep, the box contains an original fitted interior with divisions designed to hold paper, letters and envelopes. Suitable for placement on an office desk or within a gentleman's library, the piece functions practically to organise stationery items while serving as a decorative accessory in a traditional interior setting. The exterior displays a deep polished shine, complemented by working hardware including the keyhole escutcheon.

FAQs

Popularised during the mid-to-late nineteenth century in Britain, dome-top stationery boxes were crafted to store correspondence, envelopes, and writing implements. These desktop containers often featured Gothic Revival strapwork and rich veneers, reflecting the periods interest in medieval revival motifs and formal letter-writing etiquette.

These boxes were typically constructed using a solid timber core veneered in figured woods such as walnut, rosewood, or mahogany. Ornamental pierced brass straps, secured with metal studs or rivets, provided both structural reinforcement and decorative contrast.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display natural oxidisation on the brass strapwork, hand-cut lock mechanisms, and evidence of hand-finishing along the hinges and joinery. Age-related timber shrinkage around metal fastenings is also a common indicator of genuine period manufacture.

Position the box as a focal accessory on an office desk, console table, or bookshelf to add historical texture. It functions effectively as a decorative storage vessel for small items while complementing traditional, eclectic, or dark academia decorative schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish to the timber components while avoiding harsh chemical metal polishes on the brass to maintain its historical patina.
