We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

A Windsor armchair is a form of wooden seating where the back spindles and legs are socketed directly into a solid timber seat rather than relying on continuous back posts. Originating in Britain during the 18th century, these vernacular pieces evolved through the Victorian and Edwardian eras as durable seating for country homes and kitchens.

Windsor chairs typically incorporate a combination of native hardwoods tailored to structural requirements. Solid seats were frequently carved from elm due to its resistance to splitting, while back spindles, arm supports, and crest rails were crafted from flexible timbers such as beech, ash, or yew.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved saddle seats with distinct grain paths, wedge-and-tenon joints visible along construction points, and natural patination across turned stretchers and armrests. Turn-of-the-century pieces display precise lathe-turned legs and hand-finished splat cut-outs rather than modern uniform machine cuts.

A tall Windsor armchair functions effectively as a focal piece alongside contemporary furniture to create visual texture and balance. It can be situated as a standalone reading chair in a study, positioned at the head of a simple dining table, or paired with a minimalist floor lamp in an entryway.

Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent timber movement or shrinkage. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and an occasional application of beeswax polish will protect the surface coat and maintain the polished sheen.
