Mid 19th Century Pair of Gilt & Gesso Cartouche Form Wall Mirrors

19th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive Pair Of Mid 19th Century Victorian Asymmetrical Giltwood And Gesso Cartouche Shaped Wall Mirrors, Of Practical Proportions, Having Old Mirror Plates Set Within Elaborately Shaped Frames, Featuring Profusely Carved Scrolling Decoration In The Rococo Taste, The Tops Surmounted By Botanical Swags And Trailing Floral Vines, With Stylised Acanthus Leaf Scrolls To The Bottom.

These delightful mirrors are particularly attractive for their unusual asymmetrical design, with the flowing, irregular outlines and elaborate carved decoration giving them a wonderfully decorative appearance. The apparently original gilding remains pretty much untouched, which gives the mirrors a lovely mellow colour and surface, whilst the old mirror plates display some attractive signs of age.

An extremely charming and decorative pair of mirrors, which are an incredibly useful size and would work equally well hung together or individually in a variety of settings throughout the home.

Both of the mirrors have been inspected in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring they are clean, sound and ready to hang in the home.

It is worth noting that there are various historic losses to the gilded surfaces, which have been deliberately preserved rather than re-gilded to retain their original character. There are also some small areas of loss, replacement and repair to the carved decoration, together with the usual old marks, wear and minor imperfections associated with age and use, all of which blend in nicely with the overall appearance.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cartouche-form mirrors from the mid-19th century reflect the Rococo Revival movement, featuring asymmetrical, shield-like frames ornamented with scrolling C-curves, acanthus leaves, and floral motifs.

Frames were typically constructed from carved timber coated with gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and glueand finished with water or oil gilding using thin gold leaf.

Authentic pieces usually display natural wear where the underlying clay bole (red or dark grey) shows through the gilding, along with minor surface cracking in the gesso and aged glass reflection.

A pair can be hung symmetrically above a dining room sideboard, flanking a main doorway, or placed on either side of a fireplace mantel to add depth and classical proportion.

Dust frames regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or feather duster; never apply liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or commercial polishes, as water dissolves gesso and damages gold leaf.
