These Swedish Empire style bergère armchairs date from the 1920 period. They are made from dark brown satin birch with a silky finish, woven cane panels on the backs and sides, and thick cream natural cotton upholstery on the sprung seat and back cushions. The timber frames display detailed acanthus leaf carvings, scrolled armrests, and carved shaped legs ending in carved lions paw feet. Each armchair measures 85 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 82 cm deep. They work well as a matching pair of fireside or reading chairs in a drawing room, library, or formal living room. Their grand design and neutral palette allow them to integrate smoothly into both traditional and contemporary interior schemes as statement seating options.

Bergeres are enclosed armchairs originating in 18th-century France, featuring structural frames filled with woven cane panels or solid upholstery. Swedish interpretations from the 19th century incorporated native timbers, classical carved details, and deep proportions tailored to northern European interiors.

These armchairs traditionally utilise native hardwoods such as satin birch, pine, or beech, often finished with dark stains or French polish. The structural sides feature woven rattan cane, while seats are constructed with natural coil springs, horsehair padding, and linen or cotton upholstery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved detailing such as acanthus leaves or paw feet, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, and irregularity beneath the seat rails showing historical saw marks. Timber on the underside will typically show natural oxidisation consistent with age.

Placing a pair of armchairs opposite a simple contemporary sofa creates a balanced conversational arrangement in a formal living space. Neutral fabric paired with rich timber allows historical seating to integrate comfortably into contemporary or transitional colour schemes.

Wipe timber surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax once or twice a year to maintain the luster. Keep woven cane panels away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent the rattan fibres from drying and splitting.
