This pair of Windsor armchairs originates from the English Country period around 1880, constructed from warm brown yew, elm, and fruitwood. Each chair displays a curved hoop back containing a pierced central splat with fretted motifs, broad armrests finished with rounded pads, and solid seats with shaped saddle fronts. Turned spindles support the armrests while similar turned vertical members form the legs, which are joined by stretchers in an H-configuration. The pair stands 115 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, providing comfortable seating suited for a traditional dining room or study in an English Country House setting. The timber surfaces exhibit natural grain variations and a polished finish that highlights the figuring in the wood. These armchairs function well as occasional seating around a large table or as standalone accent pieces in a living space.

A Windsor chair is an iconic form of English vernacular furniture characterised by a solid wooden seat into which the chair back and legs are round-tenoned, rather than having the back legs form the frame of the backrest.

English Windsor chairs were constructed using localized hardwoods; shaped seats were typically carved from elm due to its non-splitting grain, while back hoops and spindles were steam-bent from flexible woods such as yew, ash, or beech.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned components, wedge-tenon construction visible through the seat, natural wood grain variation across different timber species, and genuine wear patterns on stretchers and armrests.

Windsor chairs function effectively as accent seating or dining carvers in contemporary rooms, where their warm timber tones and graphic silhouettes contrast with clean, modern lines.

Maintain antique wooden seating by keeping it away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity, wiping surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth, and applying high-grade beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber.
