These two 19th-century Windsor low back armchairs originate from the English country tradition, made in the style of John and Elizabeth Gabbitass. Each chair uses a combination of yew, fruitwood, and elm in a warm brown timber finish with visible grain. The construction incorporates a low hoop back containing a pierced burr yew central splat, curved armrests on flared turned supports, turned vertical spindles, and a shaped wooden seat. Additional structural elements include complex turned legs connected by crinoline stretchers, with rounded feet at the base. They remain in good original condition with constructional integrity maintained by glueing and waxing. Each armchair measures 55 cm in width, 54 cm in depth, and stands between 91 cm and 93 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. Position these period armchairs around a farmhouse dining table, in a traditional living room seating arrangement, or use them individually as desk or hallway chairs in an English country house interior. The low back design allows them to sit neatly beneath tables or in more compact spaces while providing comfortable wooden seating supported by the crinoline stretcher framework. Their decorative fretted splats and intricate leg turnings introduce visual character and historical interest to daily domestic environments.

A Windsor armchair features a solid wooden seat into which the back legs, arm supports, and back spindles are directly socketed, a traditional joinery technique developed in Great Britain.

English regional makers commonly combined species, using yew wood for steam-bent components, elm for contoured seats, and ash or beech for turned legs and spindles.

Authentic period examples demonstrate wedged joinery, hand-carved pierced splats, natural timber shrinkage across the seat grain, and a deep patina developed over decades of use.

These armchairs serve as accent seating alongside contemporary fireplaces, at the heads of minimal dining tables, or within entrance halls to contrast modern architectural elements.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain, and position pieces away from direct heat sources to prevent joint movement.
