FAQs

Ladderback chairs are characterized by multiple horizontal wooden slats positioned between two vertical backposts, resembling the rungs of a ladder. Originating in 17th and 18th-century Europe, they became a staple of British regional vernacular furniture.

Traditional rush seats are created by tightly twisting dried natural freshwater reeds or rushes and hand-weaving them around four wooden seat rails to form four distinct triangular envelopes meeting in the centre.

Authentic period examples often feature slight hand-carved irregularities in the back slats, turned stretchers with historical wear, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and natural patination on the timber frame.

These chairs provide natural texture and warm timber tones, pairing effectively with scrubbed pine or oak dining tables in farmhouse, country house, or modern rustic dining spaces.

Rush seats should be cleaned gently using a soft vacuum brush and kept away from excessive moisture or extreme dry heat. Wooden frames require periodic applications of clear beeswax polish to maintain timber hydration.
