Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Carved shell corners to the seat frame: typical Lancashire regional detailing.
Front club legs ending in pad feet: late 18th-century country joinery.
Wear through the dark finish on the crest rails: centuries of regular handling.
Baluster-turned front stretchers: hand-turned workshop practice.

A pair of 18th-century Georgian country side chairs originating from Lancashire, constructed from warm brown elm with woven rush seats and pad feet. Each chair stands 103 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, with a seating height of 44 cm. The design incorporates distinctive spindle backrests, turned front legs, and multiple turned stretchers. The woodwork presents a rich brown timber tone, while the woven rush seats show visible signs of wear from age and use. Both chairs remain structurally firm and ready for daily employment around a dining table or as decorative accent seating in a traditional or rustic farmhouse interior.

Originating in North West England during the 18th century, Lancashire spindle back chairs feature distinctive rows of turned vertical spindles framed within the backrest, paired with a woven rush seat and turned legs.

Regional Georgian chairmakers predominantly utilised native British hardwoods such as elm, ash, and oak for the structural framing, combined with natural rush or straw woven around the seat rails.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned spindles showing minor variations, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural patination or surface wear consistent with age, particularly along lower stretchers.

These vernacular chairs integrate smoothly alongside clean-lined timber dining tables, function as standalone accent seating in hallways, or provide organic texture in rustic kitchen settings.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a soft cloth and occasionally treated with clear beeswax polish, while the woven rush seat requires dry dusting or gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.
