This set of eight nineteenth century Lancashire country chairs comprises two carver armchairs and six side chairs, fashioned in dark brown timber with newly fitted woven rush seats. Each chair stands on turned legs joined by matching turned stretchers, supporting a high spindle back with shaped crest rails and upright stiles, while the armchairs display open scroll-ended armrests mounted on slender posts. The group measures 92 cm high by 48 cm wide and 40 cm deep, with the carvers standing slightly taller at 110 cm and a practical seat height of 44 cm. Positioned around a dining table in a country kitchen or rustic farmhouse dining space, these functional chairs provide sturdy seating for family meals and daily gatherings. The dark timber grain complements traditional wooden tables and neutral stone floors, while the woven rush pads offer comfortable texture for extended dining sessions. The combination of turned framing and spindle backs brings traditional vernacular character to modern interior schemes without dominating the room.

Lancashire rush seated chairs are regional English country dining chairs crafted with turned wooden frames and woven rush seats, produced extensively during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These chairs were constructed using local English hardwoods such as ash, oak, or beech for the framework, combined with natural freshwater rush woven around the seat rails.

Authentic period examples display hand-turned spindles, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, natural patination on the timber, and hand-woven rush showing age-appropriate wear.

A set of regional country chairs can be placed around a plain timber or modern dining table to introduce visual texture and historical contrast to interior spaces.

To preserve natural rush seats, keep them free from excessive moisture, vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the fibres from becoming brittle.
