This very large nineteenth-century overmantel mirror follows a French Rococo Revival style, constructed from giltwood and gesso with an original glass plate. The gold frame displays an arched top, an elaborate central shell cartouche crest, delicate acanthus leaf moulding, and a beaded border along its edges. Minor repairs are visible on the frame, showing authentic age while retaining a bright gold finish and warm decorative presence. Measuring 196 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the mirror has a substantial scale suitable for domestic interiors. In a modern home, this piece functions effectively placed above a substantial console or chest, or simply resting against a wall to catch natural light and expand the visual space of a room. It integrates easily with both antique and contemporary furniture schemes, offering a grand yet delicate focal point for a living space, hallway, or bedroom.

A 19th-century gilt overmantel mirror is a large decorative wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Featuring an arched frame and ornate gilded wooden moulding, these mirrors were historically placed to reflect light and enhance illumination in formal reception rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved pine or lime wood base covered in gesso plaster. Gold leaf was then applied over a clay bole ground using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before fitting a mirrored glass panel.

Authentic period mirrors feature timber backing boards, hand-cut glass plates displaying mild foxing, and natural wear to the gilded finish where underlying clay bole or white gesso shows through.

Mount the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, position it over a hallway console table, or lean it against a focal wall to accentuate room height. The warm metallic tones contrast against modern neutral paint schemes.

Dust the gilded frame using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leafing. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as moisture dissolves underlying gesso layer.
