18th-century French Rococo Trumeau Mirror

18th century
Description

This highly decorative 18th century mirror features a classic bucolic pastoral oil painting mounted above the mirror plate.

A deep forest-green lacquered ground is surrounded by rocaille elements, asymmetrical C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, and a central stylised shell motif beneath the top frame.

The whole is surrounded by vertical green panels featuring gilded scrollwork, rosettes, and corner medallions.

The incorporated painting which features a shepherd seated outdoors against a tree, dressed in a red vest, breeches, and a wide-brimmed hat is of particularly fine quality

This eighteenth-century French Rococo trumeau mirror combines a deep forest-green lacquered timber frame with gilded wood mouldings and glass. The composition pairs a vertical rectangular mirror plate below an upper oil painting depicting a shepherd seated outdoors against a tree in a red coat, breeches, and a wide-brimmed hat, accompanied by a dog and animals in a landscape. The surrounding ornamentation incorporates carved rocaille elements, asymmetrical C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, a central stylized shell motif, rosettes, and corner medallions. The frame displays visible wear along the edges of the green and gold finish, along with aged texture on the painted landscape panel. It measures 103 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Placement suits installation above a mantel in a sitting room or drawing room. The vertical proportions allow integration into traditional period interiors as a focal wall hanging.

A trumeau mirror is a structural wall mirror originating in eighteenth-century France, designed to set into the panelling between windows or above a fireplace mantelpiece. It classically integrates a rectangular mirror plate set beneath a painted canvas panel or carved wooden bas-relief within a single timber frame.

Traditional trumeau mirrors feature hand-carved softwoods or pine, coated with gesso and decorated with water-gilded gold leaf or hand-painted oil finishes. The upper section typically incorporates oil paint on canvas or wooden panel, whilst the lower section contains mercury-backed mirrored glass.

Authentic eighteenth-century trumeau mirrors exhibit hand-hewn wooden backboards, iron nails, and visible mortise-and-tenon frame joinery. The gilding often shows genuine wear exposing the underlying red or grey bole, while original glass plate features subtle dark spotting, clouding, and mercury degradation.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room mantelpiece or a hallway console table to establish a architectural focal point. The classical painted panel and gilded detailing contrast effectively against matte, neutral wall paint colours in contemporary homes.

Dust the carved frame and gilded surfaces using a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf or painted finishes. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners or water contact with the wooden frame edge.
