Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian Thonet bentwood armchair in the Art Nouveau style, model number 70, manufactured in Vienna in 1905. The piece is constructed from beechwood and plywood in a warm brown colour with a steam-bent frame, curved armrests, and an embossed scrollwork back and seat. Visible details include curved wooden armrests with paddle pads, sleek tapered legs, and detailed embossed floral and scroll motifs pressed into the plywood backrest and square seat panel. Surface wear indicates age through minor scuffs and tonal variations across the timber. This practical chair suits various interior settings such as a home study, a bedroom desk seat, or an accent chair in a living room. As the dimensions are not specified, buyers should allow standard clearance for a traditional armchair when planning placement.

FAQs

Pioneered by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century, bentwood furniture utilised steam to soften solid beechwood, allowing it to be bent into fluid, curved structural shapes. By the early 20th century, these designs incorporated moulded plywood components and decorative embossed scrollwork patterns.

These chairs were primarily constructed from steam-bent beechwood for the frame and armrests, combined with multi-ply birch or beech plywood for the seat and backrest panels.

Authentic pieces often feature paper makers labels or impressed paper stamps on the underside of the seat frame, alongside characteristic steam-bent joinery using exposed wood screws and bolt fittings.

A bentwood armchair functions well as a standalone desk chair or accent seat in a hallway, contrasting structured contemporary desk surfaces or modern minimalist decor with organic timber lines.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources to prevent the glue layers in the plywood from delaminating. Clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax occasionally to protect the original finish.
