Fine Pair of 18th Century Chippendale Period Mahogany Carver Armchairs

18th century
Description

An Extremely Rare Pair Of Superb Quality 18th Century Chippendale Period Mahogany Carver Armchairs, Or Desk Chairs, Having Exceptional Carved Decoration Throughout, The Elegantly Shaped Backs With Pierced Splats And Scrolling Arms With Foliate Decoration, Over Upholstered Seats Of Generous Proportions And Blind Fretwork Carved Frieze, Raised On Matchstick Fluted Square Chamfered Legs United By Unusual Turned And Faceted H Stretchers.

These really are an exceptional pair of 18th century mahogany armchairs, displaying superb quality craftsmanship and an incredible amount of fine carved detail throughout. The wonderfully elaborate pierced back splats are particularly impressive, with their intricate scrolling and foliate decoration, whilst the elegantly shaped top rails and beautifully carved arms further demonstrate the quality of workmanship involved in their construction.

It is worth emphasising that these chairs are genuine 18th century Chippendale period examples, as opposed to the numerous late 19th and early 20th century reproductions which can be found. Whilst many of these later copies are perfectly good quality pieces of furniture in their own right, finding a genuine pair of 18th century armchairs of this quality, is considerably more difficult.

Another particularly appealing feature is the generous seats, making them extremely comfortable and practical chairs for everyday use. The unusual turned and faceted H stretchers are also worth mentioning, as they add further character to an already lovely pair of chairs.

Both chairs retain a good rich colour and surface throughout, with the usual old marks, scuffs, scratches and imperfections associated with their considerable age and use, all blending in nicely. The seats have been very recently upholstered in a neutral calico type fabric which is easy to cover on top of, but also contrasts nicely with the rich mahogany timbers.

Although traditionally described as carver armchairs, these would make a superb pair of desk chairs, or even just as occasional chairs in a drawing room, library or hallway, either together or placed separately around the home.

As with all our antique furniture, both chairs have been attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring they are structurally sound and ready for everyday use. They have also received an appropriate natural wax polish and are ready to be placed straight into the home.

This pair of eighteenth-century Chippendale period carver armchairs is made from dark brown mahogany with a wax polish finish and neutral off-white upholstered drop-in seats. Each chair has an intricately carved pierced back splat, a carved crest rail, scrolling curved armrests with foliate decoration, blind fretwork carved friezes, matchstick fluted square legs, and unusual turned and faceted H stretchers showing old marks, scuffs, scratches, and imperfections. The chairs measure 93 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. These pieces work well as desk chairs, library chairs, or occasional seating placed together or separately in a drawing room or hallway in a home today.

Chippendale carver armchairs, originating in the mid-to-late 18th century, are distinguished by pierced gothic or rococo splats, serpentine top rails, shaped armrests, and square or cabriole legs crafted primarily from solid mahogany.

18th-century examples were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, and drop-in upholstered seats over sturdy stretchers.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planing, irregular tool marks underneath the seat rails, hand-cut dovetails or tenon joints, original oxidisation on untreated timber sections, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

These period armchairs can be paired with modern minimalist dining tables to create a curated contrast, positioned as flank seating alongside a sideboard, or utilised individually as occasional desk chairs.

Maintain mahogany frames by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste annually, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, and harsh chemical polishers that compromise historical patination.
