Antique Edwardian Oak Glastonbury Chair C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian Gothic Revival solid oak Glastonbury chair, the raked back panel relief-carved with an IHS Christogram set within a stippled reserve beneath a rosette crest rail, set over a solid seat flanked by swept arms featuring hand-carved foliate decoration, all raised on an X-frame base united by a low cross-stretcher, with wedged-peg joints throughout.

Reviving the famous 16th-century monastic design of Abbot Whiting, early 20th-century church workshops retained authentic wedged-peg mechanics, avoiding the glued joints of lesser commercial revivals. The generous depth created by its raked back makes it ideal to sit beside a hearth or positioned in a spacious hall, where its sculptural side-profile can be fully appreciated.

Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound with tight wedged joints throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1910.

The Glastonbury chair design derives from a sixteenth-century original discovered at Glastonbury Abbey. It gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as part of the Gothic Revival movement in Britain.

Glastonbury chairs are constructed primarily from solid oak or walnut, using an X-frame structure. The components are traditionally joined using mortise and tenon joints secured with exposed wooden dowels or pegs rather than metal fasteners.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved relief detailing, visible wood grain age, genuine wear around peg joints, and natural patination in unpolished areas. Look for traditional joinery techniques and hand-worked underside timber.

Place an X-frame oak chair as a structural accent piece in a hallway, study, or bedroom corner. Contrast the heavy timber frame with soft neutral textiles, plastered walls, or modern minimalist artwork.

Dust the wood regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, using a soft brush for carved relief areas. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.
