This large pair of eighteenth-century George III English armchairs dates from around 1780 and exemplifies traditional craftsmanship in warm brown mahogany. Each seat features a shaped crest rail terminating in scroll ears above a pierced vertical splat decorated with carved quatrefoil flowerheads on punched grounds, complemented by shaped open arms and later floral needlepoint seat covers in green, pink, and tan tones. The framework stands on square legs united by an H-stretcher, showing natural timber grain variation and subtle wear appropriate for their age. Measuring 98 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, these chairs possess generous proportions and robust scale. Suitable for placement in a traditional drawing room, study, or hallway, these armchairs provide comfortable seating while adding period character to an interior. They function well as statement fireside chairs or as part of a formal seating arrangement, integrating easily into classic country house settings.

George III seating refers to furniture produced in Britain between 1760 and 1820, characterised by Chippendale and classical revival influences, refined proportions, and dense mahogany construction.

Cabinetmakers utilised West Indian or Cuban mahogany, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed rails, and pegged corner blocks to reinforce the seat frame.

Authentic period pieces show hand-sawn timber marks on the undersides, slight structural asymmetry from age, natural timber shrinkage across the grain, and deep oxidisation in unvarnished areas.

Positioning a pair of Georgian armchairs alongside contemporary sofas provides historical texture, or place them as carver seating at opposing ends of a dining table.

Apply clear natural beeswax to the timber frames annually and keep the chairs positioned away from direct heat radiators and sunlight to prevent wood movement and upholstery fading.
