This 19th-century overmantel mirror exhibits grand Regency and Victorian design elements. The piece consists of a water-gilded giltwood and gesso frame in a bright gold colour scheme, enclosing a flat glass mirror plate. Decorative details include elaborate shell cresting at the top, an arched moulding across the upper edge, beaded borders, and engaged pilasters flanking the sides with carved decorative motifs. The wooden frame displays crisp moulding profiles and corner finial blocks. The dimensions are 182 cm high, 164 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Positioned above the mantel in a principal reception room or drawing room, the mirror reflects natural light and enhances the proportions of the interior space while adding a formal architectural focal point to a fireplace surround.

Overmantel mirrors were designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to sit directly above fireplace hearths in formal reception rooms. They served both a functional role by reflecting candlelight and hearth fire to brighten the room and a decorative role by highlighting architectural proportions.

Framing was typically constructed from carved softwood or pine covered with gesso moulding. Gold leaf was applied using water or oil gilding techniques over a coloured clay base known as bole, while the glass was silvered using mercury or silver nitrate formulations.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, such as subtle wear showing the reddish bole layer beneath the gold leaf, slight foxing or dark speckling on the mirror glass, and hand-cut pine backing boards secured with period fixings.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace surround or a low console table to draw light into the room. Pairing the detailed classical frame with contemporary paint tones creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the frame gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that can dissolve original gesso or lift delicate gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass to prevent moisture seeping behind the frame.
