Originating in England during the early 18th century, Windsor chairs were crafted by rural wheelwrights and bodgers using local hardwoods. The hoop back design emerged as a distinct variation featuring a continuous steam-bent wood rail framing the vertical back spindles.

Traditional Windsor chairs utilise regional timber species including elm for the saddle seat, alongside ash, beech, or yew for the steam-bent back hoop and turned spindles. The legs and stretchers are joinery-fitted directly into bored holes in the solid wooden seat slab.

Authentic period examples feature hand-shaped saddle seats displaying adze marks, hand-turned legs secured with split-wedge tenons visible on the seat surface, and subtle asymmetry resulting from manual woodworking techniques.

A primitive Windsor chair functions as an accent piece alongside contemporary dining tables, positioned in a reading corner, or placed in an entryway. The natural wood grain introduces texture to modern minimalist or country-inspired spaces.

Preserve the original timber finish by wiping the surface with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity fluctuations to prevent wood shrinkage or cracking.
