About This Antique Revolving Desk Chair:

Design and Construction:

Makers often chose oak for utility office chairs. This was because of its natural strength. In addition, this armless revolving desk chair features a comfortable curved bar back. An elegant vertical fan back and strong bentwood supports hold it in place. As a result, you can sit on the chair in comfort for long hours. Finally, the chair stands on four sturdy splayed oak legs.

Green Leather Seat and Restoration:

We have newly upholstered the seat to a professional standard. For this, we used top quality full-grain dark green distressed leather. We then finished it with hand-tacked brass studs around the edge. In addition, we re-glued the frame in our workshop. We then cleaned and French polished it by hand.

Revolving and Height-Adjustable Mechanism:

The chair has a revolving mechanism that turns a full 360 degrees. However, it does not recline; it only revolves. To adjust the seat height, turn the large metal nut under the seat. Rotate the chair at the same time. We have also cleaned, restored and serviced the mechanism, so it is in good working order. Moreover, the frame is sturdy, and the padded seat makes the chair very comfortable to sit on.

Condition Report:

This fine quality antique English George V oak office chair dates from circa 1920. It is in excellent condition. We have newly upholstered the seat in top quality full-grain dark green distressed leather. Hand-tacked brass studs finish the edge. The height mechanism is in good working order, because we have cleaned and restored it. There is some play in the revolving mechanism. However, this is perfectly acceptable for the age of the chair. In addition, we have cleaned and French polished the frame by hand in our workshop. As a result, it has a lovely golden-brown colour. Overall, the chair is solid in joint and ready to use

This George V period office chair originates from England and dates to circa 1920. Constructed from solid oak, the piece has a medium golden-brown timber tone, a French polished finish, and a dark green leather upholstered seat. The design incorporates an armless configuration, a curved bar backrest with vertical spindles and bentwood supports, a swivel mechanism that rotates 360 degrees, an adjustable height function operated via a central metal spindle, and four splayed legs. Hand-tacked brass studs border the seat cushion, and the exposed iron hardware of the mechanism is painted black. The chair measures 100.5 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Position the chair in a home study, gentleman's library, or traditional office space paired with a writing desk. The solid oak frame and padded seat provide support for extended periods of work or reading. The swivel and height-adjustment functions offer practicality for desk use, while the traditional profile complements period interiors and classic home office settings.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, revolving desk chairs featured a central screw mechanism allowing the seat to rotate and adjust in height, providing functional ergonomic seating for office and library spaces.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, supported by cast iron swivel mechanisms and upholstered in durable hide or leather with decorative studding.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid timber construction with distinct grain variations, cast iron height-adjustment mechanisms beneath the seat, original brass or steel fasteners, and subtle hand-finished details.

Combine the warmth of rich oak and patinated leather with sleek modern writing desks, minimalist shelving, or dark painted panelling to create a refined home office focus.

Dust the timber regularly and apply natural beeswax polish along the grain, while occasionally conditioning the leather seat with a dedicated hide balm to prevent drying and cracking.
