Chairs Set of Eight Edwardian Elm & Beech Windsor Dining C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb and increasingly difficult-to-find set of eight Edwardian Windsor dining chairs, dating to circa 1900 and constructed in beautifully figured elm and beech.

The set comprises six side chairs and two armchairs, making it an ideal and practical arrangement for a family dining table. Each chair features a traditional spindle back above a wonderfully substantial thick elm seat, displaying the beautiful grain and figuring for which elm is so highly prized.

Raised on well-turned beech legs, joined by traditional H-stretchers, the chairs are strongly constructed and have a pleasing balance of simplicity, comfort and classic English country style.

Of particular note is their exceptional colour and patina. The timber has developed a wonderfully rich, warm surface through more than a century of use, giving the set tremendous character and presence.

All eight chairs are strong, sturdy and comfortable, combining the charm of genuine period country furniture with the practicality required for everyday dining.

A particularly attractive and useful set of eight Windsor chairs, equally at home around a farmhouse table, in a country kitchen or as part of a more contemporary interior.

A Windsor chair features a solid wooden seat into which the legs, back spindles, and arm supports are directly socketed using round tenons, rather than using continuous corner posts.

Makers traditionally combined multiple woods based on functional properties, frequently using figure-rich elm for the carved saddle seat, and steam-bent beech or ash for the hoops, spindles, and turned legs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-shaped saddled seats, wedged tenon joinery visible on structural joints, subtle irregularities from hand tools, and legitimate wear patterns on footrests and seat edges.

A set of wooden Windsor chairs can be paired with modern zinc, stone, or scrubbed oak dining tables to create textural contrast in contemporary farmhouse or eclectic dining spaces.

Apply a clear beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage, and avoid positioning close to direct heat sources or radiators.
