FAQs

A Windsor chair is a solid timber seating design where the back spindles and legs are socketed directly into a solid carved wooden seat, rather than continuing from the back posts down to the floor.

Historically, regional makers utilised a combination of native hardwoods, commonly using elm for the shaped seat due to its split-resistant grain, alongside ash or beech for the bent steam elements and turned spindles.

Authentic period examples display hand-turned components, wedged tenon joints visible under or through the seat surface, natural wear on the front stretcher from foot placement, and timber shrinkage that results in slightly oval joint sockets over time.

These timber chairs are frequently paired with scrubbed pine, oak, or zinc-topped dining tables in open-plan kitchen diners to add texture, form, and historic contrast within contemporary settings.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage or cracking, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain to protect the finish.
