This set of four nineteenth-century English country Windsor lathback kitchen chairs is constructed from elm with beech components. The timber displays a rich warm brown colour with a time-worn finish, visible grain patterns, and aged distressing across the surfaces. Each chair incorporates a solid contoured saddle seat, a shaped backrest with vertical slats, ring-turned front legs terminating in tulip feet, and sturdy H-stretchers. The practical proportions measure 89 cm high by 46 cm wide and 46 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm and a seat measuring 37 cm wide by 36 cm deep. These traditional rustic farmhouse chairs suit a variety of interior settings today. They provide practical and stylish seating around a kitchen table, breakfast nook, or dining room table. Their timeless country design also allows them to function as occasional seating in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, introducing authentic period character and everyday utility to modern homes.

FAQs

A Windsor chair is a wooden seating design where the back uprights and legs are socketed into drilled holes in a solid contoured seat, rather than extending continuously from the back legs.

Regional furniture makers frequently utilised locally sourced native hardwoods, crafting contoured seats from figured elm and turned legs or back spindles from beech, ash, or oak.

Genuine historical examples feature hand-shaped saddle seats, subtle wear patterns on turned legs and stretchers from decades of use, and visible wedged or mortise-and-tenon joinery beneath the seat.

These timber chairs provide warmth and textural contrast when paired with a contemporary dining table made of glass, polished concrete, or minimalist painted wood.

Clean the timber surface with a dry or lightly damp microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish twice annually to preserve the patinated surface and protect against humidity changes.
