The Antiques Hound has dated this Victorian Mahogany Slipper Chair to the 19th Century.
It stands on its original, finely turned mahogany front legs and splayed rear legs, all terminating in their original, matching brass castors. The rear castors are meticulously rebated directly into the angle of the leg timber - a distinctive, high-end structural hallmark unique to Hindley’s workshop craftsmanship.
The chair retains exceptional, crisp stamped provenance. The inside of one rear leg is deeply stamped with the maker's name and address: "C. HINDLEY & SONS, 134 Oxford Street, London". The opposite leg bears the unique workshop sequential production/commission number: 53925. This places its manufacture during the late Victorian era, circa 1880–1890.
The mahogany frame is structurally in excellent order - exceptionally solid, stable, and sits perfectly level. The legs retain an honest, historic finish showing the usual gentle signs of wear and light superficial scuffs consistent with age, which will take a polish beautifully if desired. It is currently clothed in a later replacement yellow plaid fabric which shows light staining. Offered as a superb, blank-canvas project piece ready for re-upholstery to suit a contemporary or traditional country house interior.
