Reverse glass painting is a specialized technique where pigment is applied to the back surface of glass, building the image in layers from foreground to background before a reflective mirror silvering is applied.

These pieces were constructed using sheet glass, organic or mineral pigments for the detailed artwork, mercury or silver nitrate for the reflective backing, and fitted wooden frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinctive age-related distress to the mirror backing, natural oxidisation along edges, hand-painted paint layers visible behind glass, and period-appropriate framing construction.
