Antique Edwardian Thonet Bentwood & Leather Desk Chair C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian beech desk chair by Thonet, the solid steam-bent top rail with an elevated central panel set over a dark hide backrest, above a circular padded leather seat flanked by broad armrests on sweeping bentwood supports, all raised on subtly flared legs united by a circular stretcher ring.

Produced by Thonet and catalogued explicitly as a dedicated writing desk chair (Schreibstuhl), this Secessionist-era piece pairs beautifully with most standard writing tables, its low profile and short armrests engineered to pull up close to a desk edge while supporting the forearms.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

Austrian, circa 1910.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century bentwood desk chairs are characterised by steam-bent beechwood frames, fluid curved armrests, and ergonomic backrests. Often produced by makers such as Thonet, these designs combine lightweight industrial manufacturing techniques with durable leather upholstery and decorative brass tacks.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid beechwood, which proved ideal for the steam-bending process. The seats and back pads were frequently finished with natural hide leather, padded with horsehair, and secured with metal or brass upholstery studs.

Authentic Thonet chairs often feature a paper makers label or a stamped brand mark beneath the seat frame or inner seat ring. In addition, examine the joinery and steam-bent curves, as genuine pieces exhibit precise wooden moulding without structural cracking at the stress points.

An antique bentwood desk chair pairs effectively with contemporary minimalist writing desks or industrial steel workspaces. The dark wood and patinated leather provide a grounding textural contrast within neutral offices, libraries, or living room study nooks.

Keep the wood frame clean using a soft, dry cloth and nourish it periodically with natural beeswax polish. Apply specialist leather balm to the upholstery to prevent drying or cracking, and position the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
