Small Regency Mahogany Pier Mirror

Description

A wonderful late Regency mahogany pier mirror with original beautifully foxed mirror plate dating from circa 1820. It features a breakfront pediment above a rectangular mercury glass mirror plate flanked by turned column pilasters. The mahogany has aged beautifully, a very attractive small mirror, that would add character and charm to any room.

Original condition with good colour and patina to the mahogany frame. Marks and scuffs commensurate with age. A few small chips to the veneer in places. Original mirror plate with lots of foxing.

A Regency pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to occupy the wall space, or pier, between windows. Popular in early 19th-century Britain, these mirrors frequently incorporated architectural elements such as columns, pediments, and veneered friezes.

Regency pier mirrors were typically constructed using solid mahogany or rosewood frames, often enhanced with flame mahogany veneers. The mirror plates were created using mercury-silvered float glass held in place by pine or oak backings.

Authentic Regency mirrors display hand-cut joinery, original backboards secured with square-headed nails, and natural oxidation or foxing on the silvered glass plate. They also feature classical proportions and architectural elements like turned side pilasters.
