Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of 18th century North Italian side chairs belongs to the Italian Rococo style and dates to around 1760. Constructed from wood finished with gesso and paint, the frames display a distressed cream colour alongside a decorative carved crest rail, a vasiform splat, cabriole legs, and curved stretchers. The seats are upholstered in a rich red velvet fabric that shows noticeable wear and tear on the surface. Visible signs of age include various knocks, bruises, and losses to the painted finish across the frames. Measuring 95 cm in height, these chairs suit placement around a dining table or as decorative accent seating in a traditional or period living space.

FAQs

North Italian furniture from the 18th century is characterised by strong Rococo influences, featuring fluid serpentine curves, hand-carved details, and layered polychrome or lacquered finishes inspired by regional workshops.

These chairs were crafted using regional timbers such as walnut or pine, which were overlaid with a gesso base, hand-painted with mineral pigments, and finished with velvet or damask upholstery.

Authentic period pieces show genuine age through crazing in the gesso, hand-cut joinery, peg construction, and uneven paint wear where underlying timber or earlier paint layers are exposed.

Place a pair of painted chairs on either side of a contemporary console table or incorporate them as distinctive end chairs at a minimal dining table to create visual contrast.

Dust surfaces using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polishes or water, and maintain a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight to prevent paint flaking.
