Antique Victorian Mahogany Windsor Rocking Chair C1890

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and characterful antique mahogany rocking chair, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910.

This elegant chair features a traditional Windsor-inspired construction with a beautifully shaped solid wooden seat, tall decorative back and long curved rocking runners.

The back is particularly attractive, combining a broad shaped top rail with a pierced central splat and a series of finely turned vertical spindles. The shaped open arms are supported by turned uprights, while the legs and lower stretchers display further traditional turned detailing.

The rich mahogany colour, attractive grain and naturally developed patina give the chair considerable warmth and character. Its generous proportions and high back make it an impressive standalone piece as well as a practical rocking chair.

Seat Height: 46 cm

A wonderful addition to a traditional living room, bedroom, reading corner, nursery or fireside setting, and equally effective as a statement antique within a more contemporary interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in traditional British country furniture design, a Victorian Windsor rocking chair features a solid shaped seat into which the legs, back spindles, and arm supports are directly socketed, mounted onto curved wooden runners.

These chairs were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as beech, elm, ash, or polished mahogany, featuring lathe-turned spindles, steam-bent elements, and mortise-and-tenon joints for structural rigidity.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century display natural patination, visible structural wear along the runners and armrests, original joined construction beneath the seat, and period-appropriate wood graining rather than modern veneers.

A traditional wooden rocker serves as a characterful accent piece alongside modern upholstery in a living space, nursery, or reading nook, particularly when paired with a simple textured throw pillow or wool blanket.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the chair away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out or splitting.
