Attractive Large Antique Gilt Overmantle Mirror C1870

Description

A very attractive and well proportioned antique giltwood overmantel mirror dating from 1870.

Retaining it's original gold leaf gilding which has a lovely mellow, antique look.

Original mercury silvered mirror plate, wonderful slightly grey hue to the silvering and also an attractive sparkle which is only seen in mercury silvered glass. Minor foxing to extreme lower left of plate.

Original backing board and hanging plates.

Complete with ebonized plinth rail, which is removable if required.

Sizes 148.5 cm tall. 128.5 cm max width at base. Main frame width 112 cm.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror specifically designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were designed to reflect candlelight and firelight, enhancing the illumination and visual size of grand reception rooms.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from a carved wooden core covered in molded gesso plaster detailing. The surface was then finished with micro-thin layers of genuine gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over a painted clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces feature solid pine or oak backing boards, natural age-related oxidisation or slight silvering loss on the glass plate, and visible wear showing the red or yellow clay bole beneath the gilding. Molded gesso ornaments may also exhibit fine hairline cracking due to wood shrinkage over time.

A gilt overmantel mirror can be mounted centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point. Alternatively, it can be leaned against a wall atop a dark wood sideboard or console table to juxtapose classical period ornamentation against modern neutral interiors.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, taking care around delicate gesso details. Never apply water, liquid glass cleaners, or household sprays directly to the gold leaf, as moisture can dissolve water gilding and damage the delicate surface.
