19th century
For Sale by CJ Antiques
Description

RETIREMENT SALE. 50% DISCOUNT. WAS £500. NOW £250Crafted from solid walnut with a rich, warm grain, the frames feature elegant architectural fluted stiles flanking an upholstered backrest. The top cresting rails are beautifully embellished with crisp, hand-carved Renaissance Revival foliate motifs. The lower back rails display complementary shallow-carved leaf details. The chairs are raised on robust, ring-turned front legs that remarkably retain their original 19th-century porcelain and brass casters, while the square-section rear legs flare gently outward for stability. While the walnut frames remain structurally sound, sturdy, and free from major breaks, the current blue and gold damask fabric is worn out and requires complete reupholstery. This pair offers an excellent opportunity to create a bespoke, high-end seating set tailored to a modern interior design scheme

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed during the 19th century, a nursing chair is a low-seated, armless chair designed to facilitate mothers feeding infants while wearing structured Victorian garments.

These chairs were typically crafted from solid timber frames such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring coil-sprung webbed seats and turned front legs fitted with brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic period examples display low seat heights, hand-carved timber decorative crests, hand-turned front legs, traditional horsehair padding beneath upholstery, and original brass castors.

Low-profile nursing chairs work effectively in contemporary bedrooms, dressing rooms, or fireside nooks, particularly when reupholstered in modern textured fabrics like linen, velvet, or boucle.

Maintain timber frame finishes by applying natural beeswax polish along the grain annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources, and seeking professional restoration during re-upholstery.
