Antique Pair Victorian Carved Walnut Side Chairs

19th century
Description

A very attractive pair of Victorian carved walnut side chairs dating to circa 1860.

Beautifully crafted in walnut, the chairs have elegant shaped frames with decorative pierced and carved backs featuring scrolling foliate detail and a central floral motif. The generously proportioned upholstered seats are raised on graceful cabriole legs with carved knees and scroll feet, retaining their small castors.

A wonderfully versatile pair, these chairs would work beautifully as bedroom or dressing room chairs, occasional chairs in a sitting room, either side of a console or fireplace, in a hallway or entrance hall, or as elegant additional seating in a bedroom or guest room. They could equally be separated and used individually in different areas of the home.

The chairs are currently upholstered in an attractive coral-pink patterned fabric finished with decorative braid. The existing upholstery remains presentable and can certainly be enjoyed as it is.

We are also able to offer a professional reupholstery service at very reasonable prices, allowing the chairs to be completely personalised to suit your interior. Customers may choose from the extensive fabric collections available through our suppliers or provide a fabric of their own choice.

We can also offer AquaClean fabrics, available in a wide range of colours, textures and designs. AquaClean technology is an innovative fabric treatment that allows most everyday stains to be cleaned using water only, making it an excellent practical option for antique seating intended for regular use. Please contact us for fabric choices and a very competitive upholstery quotation.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian side chairs from the mid-to-late 19th century typically feature openwork or balloon-style backs, intricate woodwork carving, padded upholstered seats, and curved cabriole or turned front legs.

Cabinetmakers of the era predominantly utilized dense hardwoods such as solid walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, paired with woven webbed seat foundations, natural horsehair padding, and decorative fabric upholstery.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, rich walnut grain with natural patination, and original corner block framing underneath the seat frame.

Pairing Victorian side chairs with contemporary minimalist decor creates a refined contrast. They work effectively as accent seating in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or positioned alongside a modern desk.

Apply high-grade beeswax polish to the timber frame using a soft lint-free cloth to preserve the natural wood finish. Vacuum the fabric upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and keep away from direct heat sources.
