Antique Victorian Pair of Carved Walnut Side Chairs

A very attractive pair of antique Victorian carved walnut side chairs dating to around 1860, with elegantly shaped open backs, fine carved detailing and graceful cabriole front legs. Their refined proportions and warm walnut colour give them a light, decorative appearance that makes them particularly easy to place.

Each chair has a shaped open back with a carved crest rail featuring scrolling foliate decoration, echoed in the carved central back rail below. The shaped uprights flow into a generously upholstered seat, giving the chairs a particularly elegant silhouette.

The seats are upholstered in a warm terracotta patterned fabric with decorative braid edging. They stand on slender cabriole front legs with swept rear supports, giving the pair a graceful mid-Victorian profile.

These are particularly pretty examples of Victorian side chairs, decorative enough to use in a bedroom, dressing room, hallway or drawing room, while their relatively compact proportions also make them useful as occasional seating in a contemporary interior.

Condition Report

In good antique condition with age-related wear and marks consistent with their age and use. The walnut has a lovely warm colour and patina, and the upholstery presents well overall. Please refer to the photographs as they form part of the condition report.
