Fine Pair of Queen Anne Walnut Chairs by Charles Tozer

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb pair of antique walnut chairs circa 1900-1920 in the Queen Anne taste by W Charles Tozer of 25 Brook Street, London W1.

Tozer furniture is still highly desirable as the company were arguably the finest cabinetmakers specialising in the early Georgian and Queen Anne walnut revival furniture from this period.

The chairs have a shaped and scrolled walnut back splat with shepherds crook shaped arms and drop-in seats.

The handsome carved walnut cabriole legs are joined at the front with a carved Carolinian stretcher and two further turned stretchers to the rear legs.

As these are now well over 100 years old the pair have a wonderful rich, golden colour and antique.patina.

The delightful aspect to these chairs is their total originality, even retaining their original fine hand stitched needlepoint floral covers which are in very tasteful colours and are in excellent order.

Tozer’s makers label is attached to the underside of the frame.

The chairs are a beautiful example of Charles Tozer work, excellent quality, good timber and veneers used with excellent design and proportions. It is easy to see why he was recognised as one of finest cabinetmakers in his field.

The chairs measure 104 cms in height 52 cms wide by 52 cms deep overall.

The seats are at a height of 45 cms from the floor.

UK delivery can be arranged with our trusted furniture courier and costs £60 plus vat to most destinations.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Queen Anne style emerged during the reign of Monarch Anne (17021714) and is characterised by curvilinear forms, vase-shaped back splats, and cabriole legs. The design prioritises graceful proportions and the natural figure of wood over heavy surface carving.

Primary timber for Queen Anne furniture was walnut, often enhanced with figured burr walnut veneers. Frames were typically held together with mortise and tenon joinery, supported by stretchers, and feature drop-in upholstered seats covered in needlepoint or damask fabrics.

Authentic eighteenth-century chairs exhibit hand-sawn frame construction, peg joinery, and natural shrinkage across wood grain. Revival pieces, such as those made by early twentieth-century cabinetmakers like Charles Tozer, feature precise machine-assisted joinery alongside high-grade period-accurate walnut veneers.

A pair of Queen Anne side chairs can serve as accent seating flanking a console table, situated in an entryway, or paired with a contemporary minimalist dining table to create visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Maintain timber surfaces by applying a high-quality beeswax paste polish twice a year, buffing along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the chairs away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and gently vacuum upholstered seats using a soft brush attachment.
