This Queen Anne side chair dates from circa 1710 and displays the refined proportions of the period. Constructed from warm brown walnut with a natural polished finish, the piece incorporates a distinctive vase-shaped splat back framed by slender uprights. The design includes cabriole front legs terminating in pad feet, joined by finely turned stretchers and supported by solid handmade dowels visible at the seat rail corners. A hand-woven rush seat provides the horizontal platform, complementing the rich grain patterns and warm tones of the timber. Measuring 103 cm in overall height, the seating piece fits comfortably in a traditional hallway, study, or living area as a functional accent chair. The sturdy construction accommodates daily use while maintaining its historical character through genuine signs of age on the wooden surfaces. Placed against a neutral wall or paired with a writing desk, the item introduces authentic early 18th-century British craftsmanship into contemporary interior spaces without demanding excessive floor area.

Queen Anne style furniture emerged in England during the early 18th century, characterized by refined proportions, curving lines, cabriole legs, and vase-shaped back splats. The style prioritised comfort and natural wood figure over heavy carved ornamentation.

Craftsmen predominantly used native English walnut or imported Virginia walnut for framing, alongside fruitwoods in regional pieces. Seats were frequently woven from natural rush or upholstered in needlework, leather, or silk damask.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing, pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, natural timber oxidisation in unexposed areas, and age-related wear to the lower stretchers and feet.

A single Queen Anne chair functions well as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom, or study. Placing period walnut against neutral backdrop walls highlights the silhouette and timber grain.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish to the timber annually, and clean the rush seat gently with a dry brush or soft vacuum attachment.
