This pair of George I side chairs originates from the 18th century, crafted from warm brown walnut with marquetry inlay and upholstered seats. Each chair stands 104 cm high, 58 cm wide and 56 cm deep with a seat height of 47 cm. The high curved backs incorporate vase-shaped splats decorated with marquetry foliage and bird motifs above yellow needlepoint tapestry drop-in seats. The frames rest on front hipped Spanish-style cabriole legs with squared knees, pad feet and turned stretchers joining the lower framework. The timber shows visible age-related wear while remaining structurally sound, and the textile upholstery is in good condition. Suitable for placement in a dining room, hallway or study, these chairs serve as practical seating options that bring traditional English country house character into contemporary interiors. They accommodate daily use around a dining table or function individually as decorative accent pieces against a wall. The compact footprint allows them to fit comfortably into various living spaces while providing supportive upright seating.

George I furniture, dating from 1714 to 1727, reflects a transition from Queen Anne simplicity towards early Georgian detailing. Chairs typically feature curved splats, often in vase or baluster shapes, cabriole front legs, turned stretchers, and subtle marquetry or veneer decorations.

Cabinetmakers during the George I period predominantly utilised solid walnut and walnut veneers, alongside fruitwood or beech for structural components. Seat frames were designed for drop-in upholstered pads, frequently covered in wool needlepoint or patterned silk.

Authentic period pieces show hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise-and-tenon construction, and natural wear around turned stretchers and feet. Look for original drop-in seat rails, period-appropriate timber patination, and hand-carved details on the splat and legs.

Place a pair of these chairs on either side of a contemporary console table or use them as accent seating in a study or hallway. Their warm timber tones and structured silhouette complement neutral colour palettes and minimalist architectural features.

Keep wooden seating away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp conditions to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Clean surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste sparingly once or twice a year.
