This large Victorian wall mirror belongs to the Renaissance Revival style, framed in dark brown walnut with a deep profile and moulded border. The heavy timber surrounds the original glass plate with intricate hand-carved relief work, depicting wood nymphs playing with animals amidst dense foliate scrolls and cherub figures. Brass mounting rings sit on the upper left and right sides of the outer border. Measuring 135 cm in width, 8 cm in depth and 170 cm in height, the mirror requires substantial wall space. Positioned in a contemporary home, this imposing piece hangs effectively above a mantelpiece in a drawing room or living space, or commands attention along a hallway wall. The rich dark timber tones integrate well with traditional interior schemes, while the detailed relief carving provides a striking focal point in domestic settings.

FAQs

Victorian carved walnut mirrors typically feature elaborate hand-carved reliefs, drawing design elements from Renaissance Revival and Gothic aesthetics with motifs such as scrolls, foliage, and figurative cherubs.

These pieces feature dense walnut timber carved by hand, housing silvered glass plates secured with solid timber backboards and traditional joinery.

Authentic Victorian mirrors exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural timber shrinkage around frame joints, original wooden backings, and subtle de-silvering or foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or console table to create a focal point, pairing the dark timber tones against neutral or contemporary painted walls.

Dust the carved crevices regularly with a soft dry brush, apply a beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber patina, and clean the glass with a dry cloth to prevent moisture contacting the frame.
