FAQs

Georgian style dining chairs, originating in 18th-century Britain, are known for their balanced proportions, mahogany construction, and intricate backrest designs such as pierced ladderbacks, splats, or shield backs.

Primary timber was predominantly dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its rich colour and durability, paired with brass studding, hand-woven horsehair, or wool velvet upholstery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations from hand-carving, original corner blocks beneath the seat frames, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside.

Pairing dark mahogany Georgian chairs with a minimal contemporary dining table creates visual contrast, bridging historic craftsmanship with modern aesthetic lines.

Maintain timber surfaces by applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the chairs away from direct heat sources, and gently vacuuming upholstered seats to remove dust.
