A Smart Carved Oak Hall Chair, Second Half 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

The rails stamped with reference number 5876. In terms of maker, the firm of Wylie & Lochead of Glasgow are worth considering as a candidate, so too John Taylor of Edinburgh.

88cm high x 44cm wide x 43cm deep

At some point in time the chair was possibly in the collection of Cawdor Castle.

Structurally sound with no repairs. There's a smidge of movement where the back joins the seat due to the shrinkage gap. The seat has a few minor marks and fading, (star stickers to the back included at no extra cost), see images.

This Victorian hall chair dates from the second half of the 19th century and is made of oak with a warm brown finish. The round backrest includes a central shield motif, decorative carving around the edge, and three turned wooden buttons above the seat. The seat is solid wood, supported by turned front legs and splayed rear legs. The rails are stamped with the reference number 5876, and star stickers are attached to the back. There is a small movement where the back joins the seat due to a shrinkage gap, and the seat displays minor marks and fading while remaining structurally sound without repairs. The piece measures 88 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. It works well beside the front door of a home today as a functional entryway seat.

Hall chairs are non-upholstered timber accent chairs designed historically for reception areas or entrance halls, providing seating for brief callers or staff while displaying decorative carved details such as armorial crests.

Victorian hall chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, featuring solid timber seats without fabric upholstery to avoid wear from wet outerwear.

Authentic 19th-century hall chairs display hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-turned legs, authentic timber shrinkage around joinery, and natural patination across exposed wooden surfaces.

Place a hall chair singularly in an entryway, landing, or alcove alongside modern artwork or a minimalist mirror to create a striking architectural focal point.

Maintain antique oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying high-quality beeswax twice yearly, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
