This 18th century Italian Rococo armchair is constructed from giltwood with a gold finish and upholstered in neutral-toned linen fabric. The cartouche-shaped back features swagged cresting and a central motif, complemented by scrolled arms, a carved seat rail echoing the swag pattern, four cabriole legs, and hoof-form feet. The chair has been stripped to its under finish. Practical dimensions measure 118 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 76 cm deep. Position this formal seating piece in a drawing room, hallway, or study as an accent seat or standalone decorative element. The neutral upholstery and reflective gilded surface integrate smoothly into traditional or transitional interiors while providing comfortable upright seating.

An 18th-century Italian giltwood armchair is a seating piece created in Italy during the Rococo period, characterised by a hand-carved timber frame coated in gesso and finished with thin gold leaf.

These frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso preparation layers, and gilded using water gilding. Traditional upholstery utilized natural fibres, webbing, and horsehair stuffing.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-tooling on non-visible wooden sections, red bole clay showing through areas of worn gold leaf, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece alongside contemporary artwork or minimalist neutral furnishings to highlight its sculptural profile and metallic finish.

Dust the frame lightly with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water or solvents that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
