This pair of Georgian side chairs, dating from around 1820, originates from the Regency period and is constructed from dark brown mahogany with contrasting fruitwood floral marquetry inlay. The chairs display slatted backrests, tapered front legs decorated with tulip motifs, and upholstered seats covered in a pale grey fabric trimmed with braided edging. Each chair measures 84 cm in height, 51 cm in width, 41 cm in depth, and has a seat height of 46 cm. These decorative items bring period character to a residential interior when positioned around a dining table, in a hallway, or as accent seating in a living room.

FAQs

These side chairs function well as decorative accent seating in a hallway, placed beside a hall table, or paired with a contemporary writing desk to create contrast.

Position the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut inlay work with subtle natural variations, original mortise and tenon joinery, and genuine age-related wear to the timber finish.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut for the primary frame, employing contrasting fruitwoods, boxwood, or holly to create the decorative marquetry patterns.

Marquetry side chairs from the early 19th century typically feature floral or foliate wood inlays set directly into mahogany or walnut frames, reflecting Regency and Dutch design influences of the period.
