FAQs

Regency side chairs, popular in Britain between 1811 and 1830, draw heavy influence from Greco-Roman classical design. Common features include curved top rails, sabre or turned legs, and carved middle splats.

Chairs from this era were frequently constructed from beech, which was often ebonised or stained to imitate costlier woods like mahogany or rosewood. Frame joints were secured using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, paired with padded or drop-in upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving, original joint construction, and natural wear patterns along the legs and rails. Look for classical motifs such as acanthus leaves or scrolls on the splats and hand-cut joinery beneath the seat frame.

Period side chairs can be paired with modern marble or glass dining tables to create a curated contrast. They also serve as accent seating in hallways, dressing areas, or flanking a side table.

Keep timber frames away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying and cracking. Apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain and vacuum textile upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
