Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This George III mahogany salt box dates from the 19th Century in a Georgian style. The dark brown timber displays a warm patina with subtle surface variation and small dark nail heads visible along the side edge. The box stands 27 cm high, 18 cm wide and 13 cm deep. Formed of dark brown mahogany, the piece features a shaped backplate with a circular aperture at the top for wall hanging. A sloping hinged lid sits above the box body, secured by small brass hinges on the rear edge. The front of the lid and the lower body are decorated with carved concentric circular roundels. Placed upon a sideboard top, this box serves as an interior storage container in a home today.

FAQs

In 18th-century domestic settings, a salt box was a specialized wooden container, often mounted near a hearth or chimney breast to keep salt dry and prevent clumping from atmospheric moisture.

These containers were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or pine, utilizing hand-cut joinery and brass hinges to ensure durability in working kitchen environments.

Authentic period examples demonstrate period woodworking characteristics, including hand-carved decorative motifs like turned roundels, hand-cut dovetails or pin joinery, brass hardware, and an integral aperture for wall mounting.

A historical salt box can be displayed freestanding on a kitchen counter or sideboard, wall-mounted as architectural wall art, or repurposed to hold small everyday trinkets and stationery.

Maintain timber smallware by dusting regularly with a clean, dry lint-free cloth and applying a light coat of natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the item clear of excess humidity and direct heat.
